The Enduring Nightmare of Trafficked Scammers
In a TIME magazine article by Natashya Gutierrez, HRC’s Survivor Empowerment Officer Abdus Salam shares his story as a survivor of human trafficking from the scamming compounds in Southeast Asia.
The piece, titled “The Enduring Nightmare of Trafficked Victims”, focuses on the experiences survivors of human trafficking face when they return home. In many cases, their governments do not offer them sufficient support, they are in even more debt than before, and they suffer from the guilt of having scammed other people.
While work needs to be done to combat trafficking into the scamming compounds, Guitirrezz also highlights the need for the relevant authorities to prioritise survivor protection and reintegration once victims are freed.
